- Corneille aurait-il lu Pirandello ? A se laisser prendre à L'Illusion comique, à se prêter avec délectation à ces jeux d'ombres où, dans le miroir d'un magicien dramaturge, le théâtre donne à voir le reflet de lui-même, le doute ne semble pas permis : Corneille est bien pirandellien ! Ce qui n'exclut pas qu'on puisse se demander, à le voir mettre en question la représentation par cette distanciation qu'il établit entre le spectacle et son spectateur, s'il ne serait pas aussi un peu brechtien. A moins qu'on se dise qu'à tout prendre, à le regarder jouer avec le réel, changer de lieux et de décors, se complaire aux mirages de l'illusion et au bric-à-brac romanesque, mêler la féerie à la fantaisie et au drame, il pourrait bien être aussi quelque peu shakespearien ! Rapprochements flatteurs, à l'évidence, mais qui recouvrent le talent dramatique de Corneille d'une tunique patchwork où sa couleur propre disparaît, au point qu'ils incitent finalement surtout à regarder cette pièce curieuse pour elle-même, en se demandant si, au bout du compte, avec L'Illusion comique, Corneille ne serait pas aussi, tout simplement, cornélien...
