Desiderius Erasmus was a Dutch philosopher, theologian, writer, and humanist who lived from 1466/1469-1536. He was a classical scholar and wrote in a pure Latin style. He is widely considered to have been one of the greatest scholars and writers of the Northern Renaissance.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in either 1466 or 1469.
Studied at the University of Paris and was ordained as a priest in 1492.
Published his first works in 1495, including an edition of the letters of the church father Jerome.
Wrote his famous work 'The Praise of Folly' in 1509.
Became involved in a theological debate with Martin Luther in the 1520s.
Died in Basel, Switzerland in 1536.
